(PR) Western Digital Announces Equity Investment By Unisplendour Corporation

Western Digital Corporation and Unisplendour Corporation Limited (Unis) today jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement under which a subsidiary of Unis will make a USD $3.775 billion equity investment in Western Digital. Under the terms of the investment, Unis has agreed to purchase newly issued Western Digital common stock at a price of $92.50 per share.

Immediately following the closing of the investment, Unis will hold approximately 15% of Western Digital's issued and outstanding shares of common stock based on the number of issued and outstanding shares as of Sept. 25, 2015. Unis will have the right to nominate one representative to the Western Digital board of directors and will be subject to a five-year position standstill and voting restrictions. The board representative right terminates if Unis' ownership falls below 10%. In addition, Unis has agreed to a five-year lock-up on its shares, with a limited number of shares becoming available for transfer each year.

Proceeds from the investment will go toward strengthening Western Digital's balance sheet, providing financial flexibility and pursuing long-term strategic growth initiatives.

NVIDIA Preparing a dual-GM200 Graphics Card

If it could make a dual-GK110 graphics card, the forgettable $2,999 GTX TITAN-Z, it's only conceivable that NVIDIA could launch one based on its newer and slightly more energy-efficient GM200 chips. According to a WCCFTech report, the company is doing just that. The dual-GPU GM200 graphics card could bear the company's coveted "GTX TITAN" branding, and could be a doubling of the GTX TITAN X, with twice as many CUDA cores (6,144 in all), TMUs (384 in all), ROPs (192 in all), and memory (24 GB in all), spread across two GPU systems, in an SLI-on-a-stick solution. It remains to be seen if NVIDIA gets the pricing wrong the second time.

GlobalFoundries 14 nm LPP FinFET Node Taped Out, Yields Good

GlobalFoundries' move to leapfrog several silicon fab steps to get straight to 14 nanometer (nm) is on the verge of paying off, with the company taping out its 14 nm LPP (low-power plus) FinFET node, and claiming good yields on its test/QA chips. This takes the node one step closer to accepting orders for manufacturing of extremely complex chips, such as CPUs and GPUs.

AMD is expected to remain the company's biggest client, with plans to build its next-generation "Zen" processor on this node. The company's "Arctic Islands" graphics chips are also rumored to be built on the 14 nm node, although which foundry will handle its mass production remains unclear. A big chunk of AMD's R&D budget is allocated to getting the "Zen" architecture right, with key stages of its development being handled by Jim Keller, the brains behind some of AMD's most commercially successful CPU cores.
